5 home organization tips to make going back to school less chaotic

Back to school season is looking a whole lot different this year. Thanks to the pandemic, the process of going back to school is likely filled with additional challenges and stresses.  Whether your child is doing a hybrid option or full time remote learning, here are some back to school organization ideas that will help keep your home organized and running smoothly.

Tip #1: Create a “stay healthy kit” that is easy to access.  Set up a small basket or hooks where kids (and adults) can grab masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer before heading out. Fill a pencil or extra makeup case with those items and others, like screen wipes, and tuck it in your child’s backpack. It is important to create a cleaning routine for masks once worn. One way to do that is to hang a mesh laundry bag in your entryway and have children deposit their masks at the end of the day.

Tip #2:  Create a functional entry way space to store and hide gear. Even if you don’t have an official mudroom, create an entryway that catches everyone’s stuff before they get too far inside.  Add hooks, at an appropriate height, to hang backpacks and jackets. This will teach children organizational skills. Designate an area with a seat for removing outdoor gear. Helping family members get in the habit of leaving their things in their assigned spot will help ease the morning rush.

Tip #3: Organize a kid friendly snack zone. Repackage those Costco-sized bags of chips and pretzels into age-appropriate portions in labeled zip-top bags or reusable containers. Clear bins make it easy for children to see and access their snacks. Take those favorite healthy cereals, portioned snacks and drinks and put them within easy reach and at eye level.  This can be as simple as using the lower drawer of a cabinet or bottom section of the pantry. This signals to your children that the kitchen is their space too.

Tip #4: Create a dedicated school space.  It is easy to get in the habit of doing school work on a couch or bed. Set up your children for success by creating a dedicated homework station.  The space depends on your child’s age and learning style but the most important thing is to have one consistent spot where kids can follow a learn-at-home routine. The space should be conducive to creativity and learning, be distraction-free, comfortable and have all the organization of a classroom. Our favorite item to include is a rolling cart, which is portable and can house frequently used supplies for homework. A dry erase board is a great way to keep track of class assignments. You can divide the board into sections for each subject and list all the work that needs to be completed. Your child will be able to check the activity off the list once the task is completed and feel a sense of accomplishment.

Tip #5: Create a central calendar area. Nothing calms school year chaos like having a centralized site for all family calendars and schedules.  We are fans of a shared digital calendar like Cozi to help manage family activities and appointments.  Everyone has access to it and you can check schedules on the go. However, having a physical operations command center in a public place is a great way to keep your family organized. Whether you use a pre-printed white board, paper calendar, chalkboard paint or corkboard, choose the calendar format that works for you.
