We spend a good amount of time focusing on indoor spaces, but let’s not forget to give our outside spaces a little love too. Now that the weather is nice, it is time to spruce up your outdoor space for summer gatherings. Here are five ideas to help you get started.
Set the scene with lighting. Hang weather resistant string lights across your backyard to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. They can be draped along fences, wrapped around trees, or suspended above the seating area. Another fun outdoor entertaining idea is to use portable table lamps like these cool mini lights for night time dining. They plug in to charge and they can be used wirelessly, both inside and out to create the perfect glow. Finally, outdoor lanterns provide soft ambient lighting on pathways or tree branches.
Add touches of comfort and softness. There is something about a rug that really pulls a space together, but rugs aren’t solely for the inside. Define different areas of your backyard and add coziness by using outdoor rugs. Decorative cushions and pillows go a long way in making your backyard feel more complete. Just make sure the fabrics are weather resistant. Our favorite outdoor color combos are blue and green and beige and black.
Create a secluded and intimate space. Install a privacy screen or trellis and cover it with climbing plants, like ivy or clematis, to make your backyard feel more private. Evergreens like arborvitae, boxwood and holly make great foliage since they will stay green throughout the year. If sun is an issue or you don't have a green thumb, there are many faux options, like this boxwood, that will give you a similar look.
Don’t forget the accessories. Decorate your table with beautiful centerpieces that complement a theme or season. You can use fresh flowers, potted plants, or candles arranged in attractive displays. When it comes to outdoor dinnerware, melamine is the way to go thanks to its unbreakable durability. Crate and Barrel and Target are some of our favorite resources, and have pieces you would never know are plastic. We are also fans of bar carts and self-serve drink stations like this to make your hostessing stress free. Finally, you can also try hanging decorative items such as paper lanterns, bunting, or wind chimes from trees, pergolas, or awnings. They can add visual interest and movement to your backyard space.
Bring on the water, a water feature that is. A focal point helps pull a garden space together, and a waterfall, birdbath, water wall or above ground bubbler, can create a stunning centerpiece. Plus, it gives off a calming feel and buffers noise pollution.
