“Get organized” is one of the more common New Year’s resolutions. But like diets, it is often one quickly abandoned. To build better habits so you can stick to that goal, we would like to share 13 easy and affordable ways to keep your home organized in 2024.
Tip 1: Identify why you are getting organized so when you are struggling you can remind yourself why it is important.
Tip 2: Stop holding onto things because of guilt, like old gifts, things you spent a lot of money on, or memorabilia that has been passed down.
Tip 3: Throw out low hanging fruit, like anything broken, chipped or ripped.
Tip 4: Start a digital filing system for receipts, tax documents and other paper clutter.
Tip 5: Put an ongoing donate bin in your closet.
Tip 6: Start a mail station or command center and see our post on how we deal with paper clutter in our home.
Tip 7: Create a “home” for transitional items, like library books or items to return to the store.
Tip 8: Schedule seasonal declutter days and weekly “refresh your space” time.
Tip 9: Organize one messy drawer or cabinet at a time.
Tip 10: Give every single item a home within your home.
Tip 11: Get your kids to keep their room organized by teaching them what it means to have an organized space. In an upcoming blog we will give you practical ideas on how to do this, ideas like breaking tasks into chunks, creating checklists, or making it into a game they have fun doing.
Tip 12 : Look for real estate you can better use, like the back of doors or under your bed.
Tip 13: Set yourself up for success during next year’s holidays. Use your holiday card stash to update your contact manager and discard seasonal decor that is damaged or no longer works for you. And yes, you do have permission to throw away those old holiday cards (if you want!).
