How to Crush Cozy in Your Home

To me the biggest compliment I receive when someone walks through my door is “your home feels so cozy”.  Everyone wants to feel happy and relaxed in their space and having a cozy home where you can retreat to is one of the biggest elements in making you and your guests feel comfortable. But how do you create that warm, inviting feeling? Below are 15 small ways you can crush cozy in your home this winter.

  1. Bring on the textured throws and pillows in materials like velvet, chunky knits and mohair. And don’t get me started on my faux fur heated throw that everyone wants to “borrow”.

  2. Install dimmer switches on room lights. Bright is not cozy!

  3. Mix different types of lighting including task (table and floor lamps), ambient (chandeliers and wall mounts), and accent (spotlight and picture lights).

  4. Switch to warm light bulbs, like soft white incandescent bulbs that emit a calming glow.

  5. Bring on the fire even if you don’t have a traditional fireplace. Get the look with a ventless portable fireplace or a tray of candles.

  6. Layer on the rugs like a soft one in an interesting pattern over a solid color natural fiber rug. Or up the “plush factor” of your current rugs or invest in a good rug pad.

  7. Add seasonal scents in the form of a candle or a diffuser with soothing cinnamon or spruce.

  8. Choose warm paint colors and metal finishes. For instance, a cool marble bathroom can be warmed up with brass fixtures and accessories or a paint with warmer undertones.

  9. Avoid completely empty walls. You’ll get extra points for fiber art and textile wall coverings.

  10. Warm up window treatments. Replace shears with heavier fabric with thermal lining or add natural woven blinds.

  11. Stash a pair of fuzzy slippers by the front door or by your bedside.

  12. Incorporate wood elements, even if it is just a tray, bowl or cutting board.

  13. Add in something organic to every room, like branches, fruit or plants (good faux ones work too)

  14. Hang string lights outside to brighten up your patio, deck or garage.  Let's be honest, string lights work anywhere to cozy up a space..

  15. Create a reading nook.  Just make sure you have a good light, pillow and blanket.

Hopefully these 15 ideas will inspire you to get your cozy on and turn your home into a space you will be eager to wait out the winter.
