Cluttered closets and kitchen counters are often top of mind when people set their organization goals. But there are often other areas of your home that need some decluttering love as well. Here are nine places that people often forget when on a mission to declutter.
#1 Bra drawer. Although you may have many, you probably are only wearing a few on a regular basis. Make sure the ones you keep are not stretched and stained.
#2 Jewelry box. Pass on or sell that heirloom jewelry you don’t love, toss the broken chains, and donate the dated costume jewelry.
#3 Under your bed. Is this the place where you put things that never see the light of day? Make sure you are keeping things under there you really need to hold on to.
#4 Liquor cabinets. Get rid of those bottles you got for a special cocktail years ago, you just don’t drink, or have gone bad.
#5 Candles. Toss gift candles whose scents you don’t like or candles that have just a small amount of wax left.
#6 Your music and movie collection. Getting rid of CDs, DVDs, and cassette tapes is hard, but with all the streaming options out there do you really need physical copies anymore?
#7 Your car trunk. It’s great to have things on hand for an emergency (first aid kit) and for being a spectator at your kids games (throw blanket), but we often see clients using their car as a mobile storage unit.
#8 File cabinets. You certainly need to keep personal information like birth certificates, passports, recent tax documents and car titles in a safe place. Consider a fire proof safe or box as an alternative to a file cabinet. In this digital age, most statements, bills and maintenance records are available online so you don’t need to keep a paper copy. Expired warranties and tax documents older than 7 years can also be disposed of.
#9 Makeup drawer. Between the free samples, eye shadow palette you only used once, and makeup that expired long ago, only keep those that get constant use.
Your homework challenge: this week pick one of the above areas, set the timer for 20-30 minutes, and start decluttering!
