Five Design Trends to Love in 2023

At Home Space Harmony we say “you do you”. Surround yourself with items that make you smile, whether or not they are considered popular. With that said, it is always fun to see what design trends will be hot in the upcoming year, and there is something for everyone when it comes to decor trends in 2023. Below are five design trends we can wholeheartedly get behind.

Move over gray, moody and earth tones are now in.

According to many design experts, “cool” gray is on its way out.  Home decor and design trends have shifted towards more earthy, warm neutral color palettes. Warm greens, mauves, coral pinks, clays and browns are expected to explode this year and bring more color into spaces. Craving a more neutral palette? Look for warm-hued whites, ivories, camels and taupes. "Comfort” “connection” “natural” “balanced” and “restored” are words paint companies are using to describe their new colors this year.

Personality drives design.

There is a shift away from neutral, Pinterest-perfect, spaces and instead people are opting for more “character-driven” homes that feature bespoke touches and showcase personal, unique collections. Personally I love a Home Goods or Target trip where I can pick up an on-trend decorative accessory, but I also know how important it is to embrace personal and meaningful objects in your home. Items that are uniquely yours can be anything from an heirloom, a souvenir, to a sentimental or whimsical item. I framed my great aunt’s antique tape measure collection, which is something you won’t find in any other home.

Bring something old into the new.

Upcycling is predicted to be one of 2023’s greatest interior design trends. In fact, refinishing vintage furniture has become a major trend on social media, whether it be repainting or adding modern pulls. No doubt, purchasing antique furniture is an amazing way to add character and sentimentality to your home, but it also has the added benefit of being better for the environment. Easy ways to incorporate vintage include wall decor, books, side tables, and vases.

Surround yourself with nature.

Nature has calming effects. Interior design in 2023 is all about bringing the outside in and paying tribute to the natural world. That could mean using live-edge end tables or plants in your design. A huge theme this year is nature-inspired  wallpaper, fabric and murals - think birds, flowers, vines and leaves. Try some floral wallpaper on a powder room ceiling or a tree mural in your child’s bedroom.

Bye bye bland kitchens.

We’re entering a new era of bold kitchen design. White, gray and neutral kitchen cabinets will always be timeless, but we are seeing more of a trend towards black, green, and wood kitchens. If you have an all-white farmhouse kitchen, don’t worry. There are other ways, like pottery, cutting boards, art, and utensils to punch up the color and add warmth.
